What Kind of CVs Do Employers Like

Whenever there are job openings, recruiters would receive at least a few hundreds of emails and they would need to vet through all those CVs to look for the right candidates. Therefore, it is important that your resume look nice. Submitting a good-looking resume is just as important as dressing sharp for a job interview.

Many job hunters misunderstood what does it mean by a ‘good-looking resume’. We often receive resumes with pretty designs and a lot of graphics, which reflect the determination of their owners to stand out among all job seekers. However, a pretty and colorful resume is not necessary a ‘good-looking resume’.

In this article, we will discuss how a resume should look like according to modern hiring standards.

Choosing A Good Font

An easy-to-read typeface is the most important element in a resume. It should be elegant and formal on the one hand (so no Comic Cans) and modern and stylish on the other (so no Times New Roman). The font size should be around 10 to 12 pt, neither too small nor too big. Once you choose a font, stick to it on the whole document. Ideally, use the same font when writing a cover letter for a resume.

Use Consistent Line Spacing

Go for single or 1.15 line spacing for all resume sections. Use a double space before and after each heading, and in between entries in your work experience and education sections.

Label Section Headings Clearly

Make your section headings slightly bigger than the rest of the text. You can also make them visually stand out by typing in bolded texts or  ALL CAPS.

Leave Enough White Space

Recruiters need some breathing room when reviewing resumes. Jam-packing the contents won’t make a resume look good. You can print it out and look at it from a bit of distance to check whether it is crampy or not.

Avoid Using Graphics

Fancy graphics can cause your resume to fail the ATS scan. If you’re applying for creative roles, you may showcase your skills in your portfolio and attach the link in your resume.
