What Do Employers Want From Interns?

Internships provide invaluable professional experience and allow you to test the theories and concepts you’ve been introduced to throughout your college career — not to mention they increase your chances of being offered a full-time job later on. 

 

It’s easy to know what we expect from an internship, but do you know what employers want from interns? 

 

To learn what employers expect from their interns, we have done a short survey among our business partners, and here are their answers.

What do you expect from interns?

 

Hiring interns is a good solution to overcome manpower shortage but more importantly, is to help solve various challenges/problems and execute projects.

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

We'll guide/train them. But this is only possible if they communicate. Most interns do not communicate and that makes it difficult for us to help. It's all about initiative.

I hope interns can bring in new ideas to help us innovate our processes and products. 

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

We will train them and guide them because this is the real purpose of coaching an intern.

What do you expect from interns?

 

We would love to see someone who is dedicated to their field. We think that working is already challenging enough and it is more challenging if you don’t like what you doing. 

 

Besides, although interns don’t need to have an industrial-level skill set, they must at least do enough research before they come. It’s the dedication and self-initiative that matter. 

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

Sometimes interns underperform because they are still struggling in the phase to keep up with the professional workflow. So it is our responsibility to understand what is the reason. Communication is important to identify the problems. Personally, I don't believe in scolding, I believe motivation is much more useful.

What do you expect from interns?

 

Willingness to learn and a fast learner as extra manpower. Besides, I would like them to share unique or fresh angles on the related matter.

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

Interns are there to learn. If they can perform well then it's a bonus. If not, we will give advice and re-train. Consistency and willingness in learning should come in a package from an intern who really wants to learn and improve themselves.

What do you expect from interns?

 

Expecting an extra hand to assist with operations but also actively share constructive suggestions and ideas based on their knowledge of trends. 

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

I would place them under the guidance of a passionate mentor who can bring out the best in them. However, if they prove to be more detrimental than helpful to the team, I would likely not continue them beyond the internship.

What do you expect from interns?

 

As a startup, new perspective/ideas are valuable insights, and getting them from interns which are neutral on their opinions are good. From there, interns can work with the team based on the feedbacks to test out new strategies. 

 

What would happen if an intern cannot perform well? How would you assist them to improve?

 

Ideally, we would like to provide interns with more exposure to try out challenging tasks. However, if they couldn’t cope with the fast-paced startup environment and couldn’t perform well, we probably will pass on simpler tasks to them. 

 

 

Do you have a better idea of what employers want from interns after reading honest sharings from these business owners? Knowing that interns lack real job experiences, most employers value a good mindset in interns, rather than demanding them to be very skillful.
