Should I Follow My Dream, or Be Realistic?

Wong Shu Lee

  April 03, 2021

“Follow your dreams” is easier said than done. If the journey was easy, everyone could have achieved their dreams. The fact that few people achieve their dreams proves that dream chasing is difficult.

Chasing your dreams might require you to work extremely hard for a long period before your dreams come true. Sometimes, you might even work for two years without seeing any progress and any return.

Just like LunchMoney Lewis sings in his song, “everybody got bills,” sometimes we have to do jobs we don’t want to do just to make it through the day.

So, here comes the question, should we follow our dream, or be realistic? Below are some questions that you need to ask yourself before making the decision.

  1. What is your dream?
  2. Is it a dream or a hobby?
  3. What kind of sacrifices do you need to make in pursuing this dream?
  4. Are you willing to make those sacrifices?
  5. Will you regret making those sacrifices if your dream didn’t come true?

Everyone has their responsibilities fulfil. Some need to take care of their old parents, some need to feed their children, some need to pay off their student loans. If you’re free from all these problems, you should seize the moment to achieve whatever goals that you have set. Or else, you can make plans to settle or fulfil your commitments before you start pursuing your dream.

The journey of pursuing a dream is a very satisfying experience. So, if you have a dream, you should go all out for it. However, it doesn’t mean that you have to drop all other things. Make plans and split goals into baby steps, use your own pace to achieve your dream one step at a time. As long as you can visualise your dream and follow the goals that you have set, you will reach the final point one day, eventually.

“Without our dreams, we are nothing.”

Dreams keep us motivated. Although not everyone is able to achieve their dreams, you will discover a better self along the journey of chasing your dream. You will drive yourself to pick up new skills and constantly seek improvements. Furthermore, if you are very set on your dreams, and you make sure that you can make an income along the way, you’ll definitely make money out of it.

In a nutshell, you don’t have to throw away reality when you choose to pursue your dreams or vice versa. Some dreams take longer than others to achieve, but that’s what makes the end goal so worth it.

Do keep in mind, a dream without actions is just a wish–dreams won’t come true overnight. Let’s start making plans and work hard to achieve your goals now. We wish your dreams come true!
