Happy Friendship Day 2021

Wong Shu Lee

  July 31, 2021

This Sunday is the Friendship Day. It is celebrated on the first Sunday of August annually and hence, this year the day falls on August 1. The day is special for everyone irrespective of the age group. Friends are one essential part of life and they are irreplaceable.

My favorite weekend activities used to be hanging out with friends. However, due to the pandemic, I haven’t had a chance to meet with my friends for more than a year.

As we did most of our celebrating, commiserating, and caring over computer screens or six feet apart over the past year, our relationships have shifted, as some became closer and others go the other way.

"The pandemic made every person in every part of the world reflect at the same time about the value and meaning of our friendships and relationships," says Kat Vellos, author of We Should Get Together: The Secret to Cultivating Better Friendships. "Being forced apart made us realize which bonds and whose closeness we craved the most, and whose we were OK going without. Many people realized that some of their former friendships were just based on convenience or habit and that they lacked depth or true commitment."

So now that we're heading on the road toward normal (perhaps?), we need to figure out what that means for our friendships post-pandemic. Are we content with our close-knit crew, or do we want to rebuild those relationships that may have been pushed to the side?

Unlike a monogamous romantic relationship, where there will be learned ways in which you measure its significance, friendships are a certainty that is easy to undo. There are too many types of friendship to be able to easily quantify your significance.

When the pandemic is ended, friendships will not simply revert to what they once were. However, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Just go with the flow, spend time with friends that share the same values or hobbies as you.

Anyway, Friendship Day is a day to remind you to appreciate your friends. Friendship is the purest form of human relationship that is not strung by blood but by love. Let’s treat all your friends sincerely and remember to put in the effort to value the people who have stuck by you over the years.

Your friends deserve your time, presence, and companionship, and you are perfectly suited to be the shoulder they may need to lean on in times of distress and despair.

Happy Friendship Day!
