Find Romance On Chap Goh Mei, Without Throwing Oranges

Wong Shu Lee

  February 12, 2022

Chap Goh Mei, or the Lantern Festival, has always been the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day. Traditionally, everyone will dress up nicely and go out to enjoy the full moon and appreciate the colorful lanterns during Chap Goh Mei.

There is a lantern riddle hanging on each lantern. People who manage to solve the lantern riddle will win the lantern back. In ancient China, Chap Goh Mei was a unique day that even young maidens are allowed to hang out. Thus, a man would show his affections to a lady by giving the lantern that he won.

In Malaysia, for many years, unmarried young men and ladies would scribble on mandarin oranges with little love notes and their mobile numbers, then throw those mandarin oranges into the river during Chap Goh Mei.

However, due to the stringent SOPs imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, such social gatherings were put on hold since 2020.

This year, Chap Goh Mei falls on the 15th of February, which is on the next day of Valentine’s Day. If you’re currently single, involuntarily, the “double-shot” Valentine’s Days can amplify your loneliness.

Instead of indulging yourself in loneliness and frustration, why not explore some ways to find a partner for romance? If it works out, you don’t have to be alone again next Valentine’s Day.

#1 Embrace Singlehood

First of all, being single is not some sort of disease. Let’s ditch the ideas of “being single is failing” and “being coupled up is winning”. You don’t have to love being single but at the same time, you don’t have to be coupled or married just because “it’s about the time”.

#2 Make Yourself The Person You Would Want to Date

Don't just date someone because you don't want to be alone. Instead, focus on personal growth. Make yourself become a cooler and more attractive person so you can attract people that you think are cool too.

#3 Make New Friends

Many people would try finding people to date through dating apps. If you have tried it and it doesn’t work for you, perhaps you can try another approach. Let’s try building new social connections and making new friends, for example, joining online groups, volunteering for causes that are important to you, participating in local sports clubs, or starting a book club. In many cases, cultivating social support might lead to meeting someone you are interested in romantically.

Life isn't a race and you don't need to reach certain life milestones at any certain pace. Most importantly, remind yourself that you’re lovable. Learn to love yourself, so that others can love you too.

There are plenty of single people out there who share your interests, goals, and values. Eventually, you will find someone to love.

Happy Valentine’s Day and Happy Chap Goh mei
