3 Ways to Stay Happy While Being Single

Double 11 has become a universal Shopping Festival since 2009 when Alibaba's CEO Daniel Zhang began to use the day as a 24-hour shopping holiday festival that offered online shopping discounts and offline entertainment. 

 

However, the origin of this Single’s Day is actually an unofficial holiday that celebrates people who are not in relationships. The date, 11 November (11/11), was chosen because the numeral 1 resembles a bare stick, which is Chinese Internet slang for an unmarried man who does not add 'branches' to the family tree. 

 

Singledom has become more common across all age groups in most countries. The age at which people get married is steadily increasing in many countries as people try to gain financial security and establish themselves in their careers. And economic instability, as well as educational disparities between men and women, may be making it harder for some people to find partners. 

 

If you happen to be one of those single men or ladies, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, it’s important to keep yourself contented and happy. Here are a few science-backed tips on how to be single and happy! 

 

Immerse yourself in meaningful activities—and enjoy the moment

 

Happiness is more about how you spend your time and your mindset than if you are in a relationship or not. After all, you can be lonely or depressed and still be coupled up. Thus, living a happy life is a combination of doing meaningful activities, having social support, and practicing mindfulness. 

 

Enjoying what you’re doing as it’s happening is the key to being mindful. For instance, you could be at the coolest concert ever, but if you’re preoccupied with feeling like everyone else is prettier than you or something else, you won't enjoy the moment. Clear all the negative thoughts out of your mind so that you can fill it with happiness! 

 

Don't wait to be in a relationship to pursue your life goals

 

If you are unhappy with being single, ask yourself: How would being in a happy relationship change your life? Maybe you'd permit yourself to relax. Maybe you'd stop getting eyelash extensions. Whatever those behaviors are, why not start doing those things now? 

 

That applies to bigger life goals too, like pursuing a better career or buying a house. Perhaps living a better life will eventually help you to attract a good partner! 

 

Use your past to inform—not sabotage—your future

 

One failed relationship doesn’t define you. If you have ended an unhealthy relationship, stop thinking about your ex and consider unfollowing him/her on social media and put an end to talking about them with your friends.

 

Next, avoid comparing your ex to the next person you go out with. You can think of the good qualities (like smart, kind, always calm, etc.) your ex had that are important to you. Those values may be things you want in a future partner. 

 

However, be careful because our memory often plays tricks on us. We tend to remember the good parts and forget the bad, so do not allow yourself to view the past through rose-colored glasses. 

 

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. The kinder you are to yourself, the happier you'll be. And no one could resist establishing a friendship or even more than a friendship with a person that brings happiness.
