How to stay productive while working from home

In a press conference on Tuesday (20 Oct 2020), Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced an instruction to direct nearly one million private and public sector workers who are in the management and supervision categories in Selangor, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya to work from home effective this Thursday (22 Oct 2020).

Though many people have already adapted to the new normal - some may feel more productive when working remotely, others may view it as challenging as they prefer to get their job done in their office cubicle.

Get A Smooth Internet Connection

It is understandable that many people might not have a great internet plan at home since most desk job workers spend long hours in the office. Therefore, internet connection might be a challenge when working remotely as not everyone has a fast and stable connection.

To ensure no disruptions and to maintain your productivity, let’s check your internet speed and stability prior to working from home. If the speed and stability are not ideal, quickly enhance it with the most suitable and affordable solution that you can use. For instance, you can purchase a Wi-Fi signal booster to strengthen the Wi-Fi signal in your room.

Build Your Own Space

Set up a clean desk and comfortable chair to create a working space for yourself during your work-from-home time. This can help you to be more focused and to avoid being disturbed while working from home.

Communicate with your Family/Roommate

You won’t want to be interrupted while working from home, especially when you’re having a conference call. Therefore, it is important to set rules with your family members or roommates. Notify them before your meeting starts, so that they won’t disturb you and will lower down their voices.

Stay Fresh

Working from home often means that you have more time to sleep. However, it is not advisable to sleep until a few minutes before your working hours start. You can spend an extra 30 minutes at bed but let’s get up 1-2 hours prior to work, take a morning bath and a simple breakfast before you sit down at your desk. Maintaining a healthy morning routine can help you stay more alert and energetic throughout the day, thus to be more productive.

Keep In Touch Closely with Your Coworkers

In an office, you can communicate instantly and conveniently with your boss and colleagues. When you’re at home, please make sure you are responsive and available online for your coworkers.

This means that you should be attentive to your phone, email, and instant messages throughout the day and that when you receive a request from your boss you respond as soon as possible. You don’t have to drop everything and tackle their request right away, but do respond quickly with a realistic timeframe of when that task will be complete. Many times a simple response—“I’ve received your email and this will be complete within the hour”—works great. Then make sure you follow through on that deadline.

We hope all these tips above help you continue to perform well while working remotely. Stay safe and stay alert!
