Do You Love Malaysia?

Malaysia is a wonderful country. We have delicious food, kind people, beautiful places, enough sunlight and regular rains throughout the year. There are simply too many reasons to love Malaysia. As Merdeka Day is approaching, many people are showing their love and devotion to the country. Every year around this time, it’s common to see people decorate their house and vehicles with Jalur Gemilang. Besides, radio stations and shopping malls are playing all patriotic songs.

However, just like you can’t only show love to your mother during Mother’s day, there are many things that you should practice or fulfil in your everyday life as a responsible citizen. Here’s how:

Don’t disrespect your country

It’s fair to provide constructive criticism to ensure our systems and politicians improve from time to time. However, it doesn’t mean we should talk ill about our country. Dissing or insulting our own country is like piling dirt on the plate you eat your food on. So as far as possible, let’s project a positive image of our country.

Follow the Law and Rules

Rules are there for a reason. If they weren’t in place, this planet would’ve become a jungle. Always ensure you follow rules; be it traffic rules on the road or filing your taxes or scanning the MySejahtera QR code when entering buildings. If you follow rules, others might also start following them. When rules are properly followed, they provide a stable environment and human co-existence in a community, resulting in peace and order.

File and Pay Your Income Tax Properly

In Malaysia, any individual earning more than RM34,000 per annum (or roughly RM2,833.33 per month) after EPF deductions has to register a tax file. It’s our duty to pay and file our taxes properly, and it’s also required by law for us to do so. If you do not pay your taxes accordingly, the Lembaga Hasil Dalam Negeri (LHDN) will require you to pay your taxes or else face penalties, such as fines or going to jail.

It’s important to fulfil your taxpayer’s duties because that money ensures the development of the nation. In addition to paying the salaries of government workers, your tax dollars also help to support common resources, such as police and firefighters. Tax money also helps to ensure the roads you travel on are safe and well-maintained. Besides, taxes are also used to fund public schools, public libraries and parks!

Support Local Brands and Businesses

There are far-reaching advantages to deciding to “shop local”. By supporting local businesses, you are in turn supporting the local economy; significantly more money stays in a community when purchases are made at locally owned—rather than internationally owned—businesses. Local businesses are more likely to utilise other local businesses such as banks, service providers, and suppliers. Besides, local businesses are owned and operated by the locals. They care about and are more likely to invest in the well-being of the local community and its future.

So when deciding where to spend your hard-earned ringgits on tonight’s dinner or a gift for a friend, consider the benefits of turning to local, independently-owned businesses within your community.

Take Good Care of Yourself and Your Family

As Winston Churchill famously said, “Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have”. Therefore, it’s important for us to take care of our own physical and mental well-being at all time. Make sure you eat well, rest well and exercise regularly to maintain good health so that you can focus on achieving better results in work, which will eventually bring good impacts to the national economy.

Anyway, let’s embrace the freedom, diversity, and development of our country. We have come a long way to get here and we shall appreciate what we have inherited from our founding fathers. Let’s follow their footsteps to create another great chapter for Malaysia. Selamat Hari Merdeka!
